Bitly is a URL shortening service. The company was established in 2008 and since then has gained different types of users from publishers, government agencies, non-profits, brands and individual users.
Each month, Bitly shortens more than a billion links to help users in their social networking, SMS and email efforts. These links also generate more than 6 billion clicks every month.
URLs shortened using this service carry the bit.ly domain. However, companies can opt for the paid solution known as Bitly Enterprise that allows them to customize domains when generating shortened links.
Using Bitly on Social Media Sites
Bitly is best used on Twitter which has a character limit of 140 only for each tweet as well as if you need to include a very long link when sharing updates on other social media sites. It will also allow you to add a memorable name in your link and to track reactions to the link.
Bitly also allows the automatic generation of QR codes. These codes, when scanned using a mobile reader, will direct users to the shortened links.
