Hyves was a tiny social networking site in the Netherlands mostly with Dutch visitors and members. This site competed with renowned site such as Facebook and MySpace. In 2004, Hyves was founded  by Raymond Spanjar and Floris Rost van Tonningen. The service is available in both Dutch and English.

In May 2010 Hyves recorded more than 10.3 million accounts. These correspond to two thirds number of the Dutch population,  however there are included fake account per person and inactive account. Accounts quantity then, had grown by over two million as compared to 1.5 years earlier.Anybody can register Hyves free, but there is an option to be a Premium Membership called “Gold Membership” by donating. Gold members have access to some extra amazing advance features, such as the ability to use a wider variety of emotions of picture and more space to upload image. The creators announced that the basic of Hyves is free for everyone.

Hyves launched in September 2004. The name Hyves was chosen because the desired domain name hives.nl was already taken.In May 2006, it came to public as so much that the Dutch police was using Hyves as a tool to find out the possible suspects. Only suspicious person ere being checked for information.
User profiles could be created without having knowledge of HTML. Profiles can be built by filling in questionnaires and uploading associated contents.
Hyves’ users had the options to selec the options of privacy to access his content by others unknown or friends or friends to friends. User could also protect the messages in visible mode to friends or others connection.
